Is it safe to take gabapentin (neurontin) and clonazepam (klonopin) together
Clonazepam is a benzodiazepine which is used to treat anxiety and seizures. Gabapentin and clonazepam when taken together showed moderate interaction. Combined use of gabapentin and clonazepam may result in enhanced sedative effect. Clonazepam increases central nervous system depressing effect along with gabapentin. Central nervous system depressing effects intensify, if a person takes alcohol. So, alcohol consumption should be avoided. Gabapentin increases half-life and increases the plasma level of clonazepam. Clonazepam interacts with benzodiazepine site on gamma amino butyric acid (GABA) receptor. Gabapentin and clonazepam both does not affect GABA production. They decrease the electric signal coming out from neurons to calm the brain.
