Gabapentin for Hot Flashes
Gabapentin is an anticonvulsant and analgesic drug. It is approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of epilepsy and post herpetic pains. It is sometimes prescribed for other disorders such as mood swing, anxiety, pain syndrome, alcohol withdrawal and hot flashes. Gabapentin dosage comes in capsule form, liquid and extended-release pills. Gabapentin is a no hormonal drug, which improves sleep and reduces hot flashes in menopausal women. Gabapentin can be used for hot flashes, as an alternative medication against hormonal therapy (estrogens and progesterone). The prospective, double blind randomized study was directed at multiple centres for 24 weeks on postmenopausal women, two groups were split, group A took gabapentin and group B gets a placebo drug. Frequency and severity of hot flashes were measured.
