As gabapentin is a derivative of gamma amino butyric acid (GABA) which helps in decreasing excitement in the mind by reducing signals from the brain. Doctor prescribes gabapentin only if the patient is diagnosed with the bipolar disorder. It is a supplementary drug for those who are being treated with depression, but need an additional treatment to overcome some of the anxiety associated with that depression.
