Epilepsy and postherpetic neuralgia come under neurological disorders. Gabapentin is an anticonvulsant and analgesic drug. It is approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of epilepsy and postherpetic pains. It is sometimes prescribed for other disorders such as mood swing, anxiety, pain syndrome, alcohol withdrawal and other neurological disorders. Gabapentin dosage comes in capsule form, liquid and extended-release tablets.
Chemical structure of gabapentin
Gabapentin is an analog of GABA (gamma aminobutyric acid, it is a neurotransmitter). Its chemical structure consists of the addition of the Cyclo – hexyl group to gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA).
Gabapentin mechanism of action
According to its mechanism of action, no theory has been found, which shows gabapentin to be addictive. Gabapentin is an analog of gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA), a neurotransmitter which decreases the nerve cell activity in the brain. Gabapentin does not have affinity towards GABA receptors. It does not intervene with the production of GABA.
Gabapentin decreases frequency of seizures, as it aids in controlling seizures, which occurs in epilepsy. In animals, gabapentin shows tremendous activity in controlling seizures. It interacts with the high affinity binding site in brain membrane, which has been regulating secondary side of the voltage sensitive Ca+2 channel, equally it can traverse the blood brain barrier and can work on the situation. It is also found out in some study that it can cross the lipid membrane barrier. It also reduces pain sensation to the brain.
Gabapentin is used to treat epilepsy, restless leg syndrome, pain syndrome, post herpetic neuralgia, anxiety, mood swings.
Gabapentin dosage comes in capsule form, liquid, suspension and extended-release tablets. The usual dose for epilepsy is 300mg orally q.d one day, 300mg b.d on the second day and 300mg t.i.d on the third day.
Blurred vision or double vision is a side effect of gabapentin, so driving should be avoided.
